Emerson Aquino featured in Huffington Post!:

One San Francisco man took a cue from Beyonce and decided to put a ring on it. In a video posted to YouTube Friday, groom-to-be Tim surprised his boyfriend, Bennie, with a flash mob set to one of Bennie’s favorite songs: Beyonce’s “Single Ladies.”

Our very own Co-founder, Emerson Aquino, and his SF Flashmob Crew, was featured in the Huffington Post Weddings section today! Emerson has taken to choreographing proposal flashmobs these days, and he’s getting pretty good.

Program Dates: February 8th - April 12, 2013

Rehearsal Dates: Every Friday, 7:30pm-10:30pm (extra rehearsal on Sunday, April 7th)
Performance: Friday, April 12, 2013 @ the Palace of Fine Arts, San Francisco

Location: City Dance Studio | 10 Colton Street, San Francisco, CA

Price: $250 for a 10-week session, a total of 30 hours of dancing!

2012 FUNKANOMETRY AUDITIONS: “Formulating a new dance experience”

When Funkanometry LA was first created in 2001 in Los Angeles by Janet Langer and a group of amazingly talented individuals, the tagline and driving motto was “Formulating a new dance experience.” It was fitting with their vision, and helped inspire our name — Funkanometry.

This year Funkanometry San Francisco will celebrate our 10-year anniversary. We’ve gone through a lot in these past 10 years. Met so many amazing people, worked with dancers that are now leaders of their own companies, traveled the world, made some mistakes, had huge successes, and we’ve learned and grown wise through it all. The dance community has grown and changed so drastically in the past 10 years as well. Now our dance style is seen on TV, in commercials, and on Youtube, and hip hop choreographers are household names. What the community needed 10 years ago is completely different from what we need now…

As a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving our community, we believe it’s time to “formulate” once again. In 2012, we want to create a new dance experience for the Bay Area arts community. We want to take a good look at our strengths and build on them. We also want to take a good look at what the community needs, at what we’re not doing, and improve. Additionally:

We want to make art that is meaningful, and that makes you feel something.
We want to collaborate.
We want to inspire, and be inspired.
When you come to class, we want you to learn more than just choreography.
We believe in a dynamic learning experience.
We want to give back to the community.
We want to inspire our youth.
We want to build leaders.

This is who we are. This is what we value.

This October, we will be holding Interviews/Auditions to find the next generation of Funkanometry. We’re looking for people who believe in this collective vision, who believe in Funkanometry, and who want to serve our community and our youth.

Yes, we’re looking for talented dancers. But we’re also looking for more than just that — we’re looking for leaders, mentors, and teachers that want to help build something exciting and innovative for our scene…for our dance.

As our SF co-founder, Kyle Lin, once quoted at a team retreat, “We are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of the dreams.”

New (Old?) Executive Director

We’re excited to announce that Funkanometry SF Dance Company has a new Executive Director…well semi-new, because she’s actually been here before…

Gina Mariko Rosales, former Company Dancer and Executive Director of four years for Funks SF, is returning to be Executive Director! After stepping down in 2012, Gina went on to work at Google in Mountain View, where she currently works. Now she is back and ready to lead the company once again.

Here’s her official announcement from Facebook:
“After a 2-year hiatus, it’s official — I’m coming back to Funkanometry SF as Executive Director. My heart has, and always will be with Funkanometry ♥

The company has experienced a lot in the past 10 years, and we’re still going strong. I’m looking forward to a new year, with an amazing business partner, a new family in NY, a new focus on Funks, and bringing the company back to our roots of family, community, and innovation. See you at AUDITIONS! :)”

Funkanometry New York!

The company will be directed by Leslie Hubilla and Michael Esteban, and assisted by Adrian Causing. Both were former artistic leads of the well-known FR3SH Dance Company and RAPS Dance Troupe; Leslie is also a former Funks SF company dancer. Funks NY Auditions will be held on Sunday, October 21st @ Dance New Amsterdam in New York. Stay tuned for more info!
